Follow Your Dream!

A new day has come for entrepreneurs. The torrid and unsustainable pace of investment into start-ups that took place in the late 1990s is history. The rules have changed, and those navigating the waters of starting and managing a new business venture will find a fresh set of value drivers. Gone are the days of plenty of hype and little substance. Businesses today must put forth sustainable value propositions and establish a roadmap for achieving sound objectives.

Today we are welcoming a “back-to-basics” mentality from entrepreneurs and investors alike. This shift is a much-needed response to the economic conditions we are currently experiencing. There is no bear market on good ideas and no bear market for innovations and creative entrepreneurs. So regardless of where we are in the inevitable business cycle, this much is true: To effectively build an organization, you need a clear vision as to where you want to go and a solid business plan that gets you there.

Operating in an economy that is emerging from a recession requires entrepreneurs to enter the market with their eyes wide open. The landscape isn’t pretty; but there are plenty of opportunities for those with rational expectations. For instance, the time horizon for a company to “exit,” either through an initial public offering or acquisition, has returned to a minimum period of five to seven years from inception. For many, this journey to a successful harvest will be much longer; therefore commitment and persistence is the name of the game. Entrepreneurs who are focused solely on the potential windfall at the end of the day will not only be disappointed when it doesn’t arrive on time, but they are also more likely to make operating mistakes at a critical time in their venture’s evolution.

The ability to manage effectively in uncertain times and when problems arise will help entrepreneurs and business executives keep their strategic heading. Such maneuvering requires flexibility and an aptitude for seeing beyond the crisis du jour to the ultimate objective, building a company with sustainable value. These challenges aside, we must not forget that some of the most successful start-ups began during a recession. Those companies that can survive this environment, make difficult but deliberate decisions, and remain focused will emerge stronger than most.

Whether or not you are searching for outside investors, understanding what successful venture capitalists look for in a start-up company will help set you on the right path. The first, and perhaps most obvious, criterion is strong management. Having a great idea is not enough: Your team needs to be in a position to execute differently. Each executive should bring a level of expertise to the table. That goes for the Board of Directors as well. Corporate directors are now presumed accountable for certain company operations including audit and compensation. They can also be indispensable in other areas, such as the sales process.

Today, sound management is when both the Board and the management team set milestones for the company and often review progress against those goals. Knowing that you are on the right track is important; realizing that you may be on the wrong one is crucial.

Entrepreneurs embody the American dream. Fired with ideas, they have been the engine to our economic growth and subsequently have set our economy apart from all other nations. Entrepreneurship is the vehicle for creating new jobs, generating revenue, advancing innovation, enhancing productivity, and improving business models and processes. Despite the challenges, entrepreneurship has never before been more vital to our economy than it is today. It is our best offense for economic progress and our finest defense against the status quo. Promoting entrepreneurship is in everyone’s best interest.

Our articles promote entrepreneurship and provide the necessary tools for both the new and experienced entrepreneur to stay on course and succeed. Our guidance facilitates the strategic focus required to win in the game of business. Launching a new business venture is risky, and nothing is ever guaranteed. We will share with you good management practices, offers thoughtful insights, and this guidance will serve you well throughout the life of your venture. Regardless of your role at your organization, you will find that the decision-making process is subject to a higher level of scrutiny all around. Entrepreneurship is not for the weak at heart. As we say, the risks are plentiful, but so are the rewards for those who make it.

We concur with James Collins, co-author of the bestseller Built to Last, who said that “entrepreneurship is becoming to the world what architecture is to the world of building buildings.” We feel that the true golden age of entrepreneurship is in front of us, not behind us. While the economy in general may still seem tough, we feel that there are many positive factors affecting entrepreneurs today. Today’s creative disrupters will create new market opportunities and new groups of market leaders. We see that IT buyers are beginning to experiment with a range of new architectures and core technologies. Entrepreneurs can find and hire great people, and resources like real estate are plentiful. Business plans are more realistic and the best entrepreneurs are focusing, as they should, on true innovation and on creating sustainable long-term value.

Henry George, an American journalist, once said, “Whoever becomes imbued with a noble idea kindles a flame from which other torches are lit, and influences those with whom he may come in contact, be they few or many.” We sincerely hope that this information has provided a flame from which your torch was lit and can now be used to illuminate your journey to success.

Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Our Educational Activities
Entrepreneurship is the cornerstone of the free enterprise system. We have found that more than 500 million adults were engaged in some form of entrepreneurial activity around the world each year. Good entrepreneurial management is therefore vitally important to the economic health not only of American businesses, but also of businesses in the rest of the world.

Because of its importance, entrepreneurial management should be thoroughly understood, but this is easier said than done. The field is relatively complex, and it is undergoing constant change in response to shifts in economic conditions.

In addition, there is a substantial body of knowledge, concepts, and tools that entrepreneurs need to know in order to launch and grow a company successfully. All of this makes entrepreneurship stimulating and exciting but also challenging and sometimes discouraging.

Our educational activities include:

- Publishing educational books, textbooks, newsletters, articles, white papers and other public interest materials to increase awareness of entrepreneurship

- Serving hundreds of educational institutions, thousands of students studying entrepreneurship, and potentially millions around the world

- Providing our Online Incubator Program and other advisory services to the general public worldwide as an educational service

Creative Educator – Roadmap To Silicon Valley Travel Course

Roadmap To Silicon Valley
Exclusive Travel Course To Silicon Valley & San Francisco
Provides a real-world introduction to the process of financing entrepreneurial ventures and the functions of the major venture capitalists. The class will visit Silicon Valley, California for one week. Interviews will be scheduled with a variety of firms including venture capitalists, investment banks, professional service providers, and master entrepreneurs. The class will also feature a series of classroom lectures and online assignments.

Course Objectives
- First, students will learn about the importance of Silicon Valley and even the connection to Dr. Arnold Beckman, who funded the area’s first silicon transistor company. For the past fifty years Silicon Valley has been the world center for venture capital, technology investment, and innovation. The Silicon Valley “model” of financing deals and supporting entrepreneurial capitalism is widely used around the world. Getting a business plan funded by a venture capitalist is an “eyeball-to-eyeball” process. This travel course will provide students a chance to learn about the world of financing entrepreneurial ventures through the eyes of Silicon Valley’s visionary venture capitalists, leading professional service providers and master entrepreneurs.

- Second, this course teaches students how to become better prepared entrepreneurs by focusing on the “venture drill process” which consists of: packaging (preparing a business plan); placing (finding the best venture capitalist for the deal and getting introduced); and presenting (face-to-face discussions with a venture capitalist.) It is preferred that the students have a prepared business plan or presentation before making the trip. In this course students will have the opportunity stress test their ideas, and/or refresh a business plan, update presentation slides, business modeling, and financial modeling. The venture capital world is a highly networked industry. Students will have the opportunity to build viable contacts with venture capitalists, professional service providers, and master entrepreneurs.

- Third, students will review entrepreneurship and ethics. Learn how to manage ethical challenges of launching and growing an entrepreneurial venture in the 21st Century. Students will learn how to create value, act honestly, and deal by mutual consent. Presents a framework for thinking about and acting on business ethics. Students will learn how to evaluate the available evidence, identify what is important, and learn how to recognize what is ethical and how to act accordingly. Students will be exposed to tools that can help them identify and explain the principles that support an ethical basis for supporting capitalism in the global market.

Content Major Study Units:
- Discuss the evolution of the venture capital industry from France to Silicon Valley
- Explain the economic impact of venture capitalists and their investments in America
- Review how the venture capital industry functions
- Review the venture drill process: packaging, placing and presenting a deal to a venture capitalist
- Explain how to negotiate with investors and how to manage the deal process at the “deal table” through mutual consent
- Describe and review why entrepreneurs fail in securing funding (lying, dishonesty, and unethical business practices)
- Explain the importance of delivering the business-building and value promised beyond the closing of the deal
- Learn how to manage ethical challenges of launching and growing an entrepreneurial venture in the 21st Century

While working with Performance Machine on creating the new product line for custom motorcycles, we recommended that Roland prepare a business plan, and business strategy to spin-off from the company and establish an independently operated design center to break free from the existing corporate barriers to innovation at Performance Machine.

Performance Machine is one of the most successful manufacturers of motorcycle accessories in the industry today. With more than 300 employees, $40 million in topline sales, and manufacturing operations in Southern California, China, and Europe, this Company is the industry leader for high-performance parts and accessories in the motorcycle industry. The Company needed to quickly assess the financial health of the organization and allocate resources to optimize the organization’s performance for development of a new product line.

Responsibilities for this assignment included conducting business performance reviews of all the Company’s activities, focusing on business process improvement and quality control and management of its Chinese manufacturing capabilities, creating a roadmap for allocating critical capital resources based on the market potential of the new product line, alignment of working capital management with the new product development thrust, and optimizing supply chain processes and management across three continents, thus achieving high asset productivity. Analytical tools used included financial decision support models, cost analysis, forecasting, generic benchmarking, and productivity measurement.

RSD became the newly-formed Design, Research and Development Center for Performance Machine.
This new organization quickly needed a business plan, finance plan, and organizational structuring plan to present for the strategic investors that included Performance Machine and other industry leaders.

The newly formed company went on to become the winner of Discovery Channel’s Motorcycle “Biker Build-Off.” The company’s showcase motorcycle called “No Regrets” featured many innovative new products that will be developed for the motorcycle industry.

Advisor – Business Plan Outline

The business plan is perhaps the most important written document you can ever create. It describes all critical internal and external elements and strategies for guiding the direction of your venture’s first several years as well as giving potential investors an idea of the venture’s structure, objectives, and future plans. It communicates important entrepreneurial management practices, such as how your venture will mitigate risk, and how your venture will manage uncertainty.

Our business plan outline simply follows the content and approach of our educational program.

>>Learn More: http://roadmap.gcase.org/

We recommend that the total length of your business plan be no more than 15 to 20 pages. Each Value Driver should be one page (10 total pages) with 3 to 5 paragraphs for each page. Your financial section should be limited to 3 to 5 pages (the notes and assumptions can be embedded on the spreadsheets) and your Executive Summary should also be 3 to 5 pages.
